5700 Opera is defined by a tufted headboard. Tufting is slow, hand-worked upholstery — each button is pulled through and tied — and it is the one detail on the bed that could not be done by machine.

The buttoning breaks a large flat headboard into a field of soft diamonds, which is what stops it reading as a slab. The frame is lifted on a suspended base with metal or wooden feet.
