About Babar
Design
Babar is a series of round and oval tables and consoles designed by Patricia Urquiola. The silhouettes are simple at first glance, then the surface catches the eye. Each piece is hand-made, with an intentionally irregular geometry that reads more organic than engineered. And that’s the point: no two tops look exactly alike.
The collection comes in five tones—ice, jade, clay, honey, and lavender. The color is never perfectly uniform. It shifts softly across the surface, with natural variation that makes each piece feel individual rather than factory-perfect.
Materials & build
Glasitalia makes Babar from a special 100% recycled glass grit, blended with polymers that are partly of plant origin and sourced from renewable materials. The finish is textured and rough to the touch, with evident irregularities and structural and chromatic differences. These are intrinsic to the material and should be expected, not “fixed.”
The legs are designed to be assembled and dismantled with a practical system of metal plates. It’s straightforward, and it keeps the look clean once installed. Babar is not available custom made, so the character comes from the making process and the material, not from bespoke sizing.
Comfort, in the everyday sense
This is not a precious, high-gloss tabletop that asks everyone to be careful. The tactile finish encourages real use. But it also asks for a certain mindset: the roughness, the small shifts in level, the slight color movement—those are the experience.
The forms are generous and visually calm, even when the surface is lively. It works best for people who like a table to feel present in the room, not disappear.
Placement & lifestyle
Babar spans compact to expansive sizes. Round options range from about 16.5 inches in diameter at 20.1 inches high, up through approximately 63.0 inches in diameter at 29.1 inches high. Oval formats include about 78.7 by 39.4 inches at 29.1 inches high, and a slimmer console proportion around 51.2 by 17.7 inches at 29.1 inches high.
That range makes it easy to keep a consistent look across different rooms. A smaller piece can sit quietly beside a seating area, while larger tops hold a dining setting with the same material presence. And because the color is always slightly variable, mixing pieces in the same shade still feels layered.
Longevity
Babar is built around material honesty. The surface will always show its irregular texture and natural differences, and that helps it age without the pressure of looking “new.” The piece is meant to live with daily marks and shifting light, not fight them.
With its recycled glass base and practical assembly system, Babar by glasitalia is a considered choice for clients who want design with a point of view, and who appreciate that true consistency isn’t the goal here.
