About Layers Bookshelve
Design
Layers Bookshelve is a clean, graphic piece by Nendo, built around the idea of reveal and conceal. The shelving reads as a white, matte glass volume, then the front comes alive as doors slide across it. Some areas stay crisp and open, others turn into a soft screen. And as the panels move, the look shifts without changing the overall calm of the form.
The doors are suspended from the top, so the movement stays light. The color is the point here: transparent glass panels in special tones overlap and create new shades as they pass each other. Two versions keep the mood distinct, one in warm tones of orange, red, and brown, and one in cooler blue, grey, and violet.
Materials & Build
The structure is made in white matt extralight lacquered glass. The main elements are laminated and glued in 8+8 mm thickness, about 0.31+0.31 inches. It gives the piece a solid presence without losing that signature clarity at the edges. It also keeps lines sharp, which matters when everything is essentially planes and joints.
The top and the doors can be dismantled. That simple detail makes the piece more practical to handle over time, especially for moves or installation in tighter spaces. Custom sizing is not available, so the design stays exactly as intended.
Everyday Use
Layers is made for living rooms and studies where storage should not look busy. The sliding doors partially obscure the shelves, so books and objects can be edited in and out of view. But it never feels like a cabinet that hides everything. It’s more like a controlled blur, with moments of clear transparency depending on where the panels land.
The overlapping colors bring a subtle, changing image to the front. It’s restrained, not decorative for the sake of it. And because the doors move, the composition can be adjusted whenever the room needs a quieter look.
Placement & Proportions
Two configurations cover different settings. LAY01 measures about 63.0 inches long, 19.7 inches deep, and 42.5 inches high. It sits comfortably as a low, architectural storage piece. LAY02 extends to about 78.7 inches long, keeps the same 19.7-inch depth, and drops to 31.9 inches high for a longer, lower profile.
In either size, the glass surface keeps the piece visually light. It works well against textured walls, near art, or beside upholstery, where the matte white body and shifting door colors can stand out without overpowering the room.
Longevity
Glas Italia builds this piece around glass that is meant to stay precise. The lacquered finish keeps the look consistent, and the laminated construction supports daily use. The ability to dismantle the top and doors also helps protect the main panels during handling.
For clients who want a bookshelf that feels designed from every angle, Layers Bookshelve offers a controlled, durable approach. It doesn’t chase trends. It simply gives storage a sharper point of view.
