About Quantum Bookcases

Design

Quantum Bookcases read as a composition more than a single shelf. Glass boxes of different sizes are glued at 45° and intentionally overlapped, slightly misaligned, so the whole piece feels graphic and light, with a bit of tension. It’s structured, but not rigid. And because the boxes are layered, the eye keeps moving across the front rather than stopping at a simple grid.

Designed by Piero Lissoni, the system is offered in multiple pre-set configurations, from long, low layouts to taller walls of storage. Overall sizes range up to about 130.0 inches long, 15.7 inches deep, and 64.6 inches high, with other heights at roughly 48.8 inches, 33.1 inches, and 17.3 inches, depending on the composition.

Materials & build

Every finish is executed in laminated or tempered safety glass. Options include transparent extra-clear glass, versions with back panels in extra-light, smoked, bronze, or transparent colored glass, and an alternative in fully mirrored glass. The effect changes dramatically with the finish: extra-clear stays almost invisible, while smoked or mirrored brings more presence and contrast.

The boxes sit on an oak base with a black lacquered open-pore finish. Minimal chromed metal joints fix the elements to each other, keeping the structure clean without interrupting the glass volumes.

Doors, access, and day-to-day use

Some units can be closed when needed, thanks to understated minimal hinges in brushed inox anodized aluminum. Doors are available in tempered extra-light glass or tempered mirrored glass, and they open with a push-pull system. No handles, no visual noise. But when the doors are closed, the composition still looks consistent, not like storage added as an afterthought.

Placement & lifestyle

Quantum Bookcases work well as a statement storage wall, but they also suit open-plan spaces where a lighter footprint matters. Single- or double-sided versions allow placement against a wall or used as a room divider, depending on the selected composition. And the 15.7-inch depth keeps it practical for books and objects without taking over the room.

Because the volumes are irregular, styling feels easy. A few shelves can stay dense with books, while others hold art pieces or simply stay open for breathing room.

Longevity

The construction focuses on stable materials and precise connections: safety glass throughout, controlled hinges, and a solid oak base. Finishes are fixed as specified, and the collection is not available custom made. For clients who want a strong, consistent look from a single system, Quantum Bookcases by glasitalia deliver that clarity for the long run.
