Specchio di Proust

About Specchio di Proust

Design

Specchio di Proust is a rectangular mirror with a frame that refuses to stay quiet. The surface is polychrome and deliberately textured, defined by visible paint-stroke marks that read as movement rather than pattern. It feels graphic from across the room, then more nuanced up close. And it still stays disciplined in shape, which keeps the look from getting too loud.

Designed by Alessandro Mendini, the piece balances artful color with clean geometry. It isn’t trying to blend in. But it also doesn’t need a lot of supporting decor to make sense; the rectangle keeps it composed, even when the palette is expressive.

Materials & Build

The frame’s character comes from its painted, brush-textured finish. Those strokes are part of the design language, not an afterthought, so the edges feel intentional and the color has depth. The mirror itself stays crisp and straightforward, giving the frame space to do the talking.

It’s offered in a single standard configuration rather than made to order. There’s a confidence in that decision: this is the version that was meant to exist. For installation, it’s made to be fixed either vertically or horizontally, with a double fixture that supports both orientations.

Everyday Use

For a mirror with so much personality around the perimeter, the experience in front of it is pleasantly calm. The reflective area reads clean and clear, so the frame doesn’t distract from the reason it’s there. And because it can be mounted in two directions, it’s easier to get the proportions right for the space and for the way people actually use it.

Placement & Lifestyle

At approximately 27.6 inches wide by 39.4 inches high, it lands in that versatile middle size that works in more rooms than expected. In a hallway, it adds energy without taking up floor space. In a bedroom or dressing area, it becomes a daily companion with a little attitude.

In a living room, it works best when it has breathing room—one clean wall, a console beneath, a few objects that don’t compete. But it can also hold its own in more layered interiors, especially when there’s already some color in the mix.

Longevity

Glas Italia’s Specchio di Proust is not a trend piece dressed up to look important. The bold frame will always be a choice, and that’s the point. The solid rectangular format helps it age well, even as rooms evolve.

The fixed-size format and dependable mounting options make it easy to live with over time. Hang it, rotate it when the room changes, and let the frame keep doing what it does best: bring a bit of visual tension, day after day.
